Right leg (left) of a patient with chromoblastomycosis, a chronic fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by several species of dematiaceous (pigmented) fungi. It is a slow-growing infection that usually results from a minor injury to the skin such as a thorn prick or splinter. It eventually causes painless warty dry nodules or plaques and may spread to new areas of the body. Treatment, with drugs, cryotherapy (freezing), or surgery, is difficult and can take a long time to effect a cure.
