World War II bomb damage, Balham Underground station, London, UK. People used London Underground stations as shelters from bombs during the Second World War (1939-45). On the 14th October 1940, a bomb fell above Balham Underground station, resulting in the death of 64 people. The most intense period of bombardment, known as the Blitz, took place during 1940-1941.
