This genus of hoverfly (Sphaerophoria) is a member of the family Syrphidae. Males are distinguishable by the large hemispherical terminalia. They are found in a wide variety of habitats with lots of vegetation. The flight period is from April to November with adults feeding on a wide range of flowers, particularly umbellifers. The larvae feed on Aphids. This genus is found across the Palearctic ecozone. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in April.
