Black rhino (Diceros bicornis) standing on the grass. The black rhino lives in the savannahs and tropical bushlands of Africa. Although the species is referred to as black, its colours vary from brown to grey. They can weigh up to 1350 kilograms. Black rhino populations suffered a drastic decline at the end of the 20th century. Between 1970 and 1993, the population of black rhinos decreased by 96 percent from approximately 65,000 to only 2,300 surviving in the wild. Since then, intense anti-poaching efforts and conservation efforts have allowed the species to slowly recover. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimated in 2020 that there were 3,142 mature black rhinos remaining in the wild.
