Brain activity during dreaming, illustration. Dreams occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase. REM sleep is also known as paradoxical sleep as the sleeper has no muscular activity but an electroencephalogram reveals intense brain activity. The movements, images and sounds evoked in dreams mobilise the same brain regions as during wakefulness. However, depending on the phase of sleep, nerve transmission to the muscles is more or less blocked.
