Satellite image of the Sea of Galilee and its surrounding landscape in northern Israel. The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake located at one of the lowest points on Earth. Its a popular destination for religious pilgrims. The majority of the water comes from the Jordan River which flows from Lebanon in the north to Israel and Jordan in the south. Due to a lack of rain, rising temperatures, and the expansion of farmland (bright green) and irrigation around the lake, water levels dropped significantly from 2000-2020 with the lowest recorded level in 2018. The decrease in water levels led to an increase in salinity, making it less suitable as a source of drinking water and posing a threat to fish populations. However, the lake has had some relief with two wet winters in 2019-2020, which helped its water levels to rebound considerably. As of 16 December 2020, the water level of the lake stood at 210 meters, which is nearly full by hydrologists standards.
