AWAKE (Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment) helicon plasma cell R&D laboratory at CERN (European Particle Physics Laboratory). AWAKE aims to investigate the use of plasma wakefields driven by a proton bunch to accelerate charged particles. A plasma wakefield is a type of wave produced by particles as they move through a plasma. The experiment sends proton beams through plasma cells to create these fields. AWAKE has demonstrated that it is possible and efficient to use plasma wakefields generated by proton beams to accelerate charged particles. The experiment was conducted over a distance of 10 metres using a rubidium plasma cell. By harnessing wakefields, physicists may be able to produce accelerator gradients that are hundreds of times higher than those currently achieved in radiofrequency cavities. This could allow future colliders to generate higher energies over shorter distances than what is possible today.
