Lead ion collisions taken from tracking detectors on the NA49 (North Area 49) experiment, part of the heavy ion project at CERN (European Particle Physics Laboratory). These collisions create a complex array of hadrons as the heavy ions disintegrate. Scientists are hoping that one of these collisions will create a new state of matter called the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The QGP is of great interest as it may help to understand the early stages of the universe, particularly the conditions that existed microseconds after the Big Bang, and how the transition occurred from quark-gluon plasma to the particles observed today.
