Large solar prominence. Prominences are dense clouds of plasma, or ionised gas, that extend outward from the Suns surface into its outer atmosphere, called the corona. They are associated with the Suns magnetic field. Prominences can arc hundreds of thousands of kilometres over the Suns surface, several times larger than Earth. Image captured on 29 January 2023 from the Dark Sky Alqueva Observatory in Portugal.
