Light micrograph of the epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin. It is composed of several layers which are (from top to bottom): corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, and basalis. The lower parts of the epidermis form rete ridges, or finger-like projections, into the dermis. The corresponding projections of dermis (lighter pink) around the rete are called the dermal papillae, which can be seen at the bottom of this image. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section.
