Common malaria mosquito (Anopheles quadrimaculatus) eggs in water. This species lays between 50 and 200 eggs at a time, and floats on either side of the egg allow them to stay atop water. The adults are known vectors of malaria. Females feed on mammalian blood, and in doing so can inject malaria parasites, infecting the mammalian host and allowing the malaria parasites to complete their life cycle.
