Light micrograph showing Histoplasma capsulatum var. dubosii, a fungus that can cause the disease African histoplasmosis. This is a rare (possibly underreported) form of histoplasmosis endemic to intertropical Africa. It is still poorly understood, but symptoms can include lesions on or under the skin, swelling of the lymph nodes and bone infections. It is not know how the disease is acquired, other than the fact that this fungi is causative. It has been reported most often in young men, and particularly affects immunocompromised people. Treatment involves antifungal drugs, sometimes with surgical intervention, such as drainage of lesions.
