Composite image showing the Moon setting over 30 minutes above bioluminescent (glowing) plankton (bottom) on Soneva Fushi island, Maldives. Due to the position of the Maldives close to the equator, the moon is seen to set almost vertically, with colours changing as the sun rises. The bioluminescence is caused by a chemical reaction between a compound called luciferin and oxygen. This reaction occurs when the plankton are disturbed, with excess energy released as light. Photographed over the 5th and 6th of February 2023.
