This is a dorsal view of the newt larvae of the Iberian ribbed newt, also known as the gallipato or Spanish ribbed newt (Pleurodeles waltl). Newt larvae breath through external gills which can be seen protruding from behind the head region. Initially the gills are feathery but become covered in skin cells (as in this image) and are resorbed into the body as the larvae develops into a juvenile newt.
