European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-2) in a cleanroom during launch preparation. The lower half of ERS-2, or platform, provides the power and propulsion; the upper half, or payload, carries the instruments. The primary instruments are the Active Microwave Instrument (silver) seen in its stowed position on the top and sides of the satellite; the Radar Altimeter (large dish, upper left) and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer next to it. Used for Earth observation, ERS-2 was launched on 21 April 1995. After 16 years of successful operation the satellite was retired in 2011 and began its deorbiting procedure. The satellite entered EarthIllustrations atmosphere in February 2024, burning up on re-entry.
