Reconstruction of the extinct Eurasian cave lion (Panthera spelaea) which lived in the Pleistocene epoch. This species evolved around 600,000 years ago and inhabited Eurasia and North America until its extinction around 12,000 years ago. It is believed to have been slightly larger than modern lions, with the males having a comparatively reduced mane. Photographed in the Museum of Human Evolution, Burgos, Castile and Leon, Spain.
