This military fortification dates back to the late 19th century. It is one of a ring of defensive fortifications constructed around the natural harbour of Milford Haven. The construction of the forts was first proposed by the 1860 Royal Commission into the defence of the United Kingdom, which was held in response to the perceived strength of the the French Navy.
