Lithograph of Sarah Ponsonby (1755??831, left) and Lady Eleanor Butler (1739??829, right), known as the Ladies of Llangollen. The Ladies of Llangollen were two upper class Irish women who lived together in Llangollen, Wales, having moved there to escape pressures to enter conventional marriage in Ireland. Their lifestyle was the subject of great interest and scandal. They gained celebrity and hosted many famous guests, including authors Lord Byron and Mary Shelley, the Duke of Wellington and the poet William Wordsworth. Lithograph by R.J. Lane, ca. 1832, after Mary Parker (later Lady Leighton), 1828.
