Illustration of the Airbus Turbofan hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft. Airbus launched the ZEROe project in 2020 to develop the worlds first zero-emission commercial aircraft by 2035. In this model, two hybrid-hydrogen turbofan engines provide thrust. The liquid hydrogen storage and distribution system is located behind the rear pressure bulkhead. Hydrogen fuel cells work by transforming the hydrogen into electricity through a chemical reaction. The by-product of the reaction is water vapour, resulting in almost zero emissions.
