Illustration showing Le Forts procedure (Colpocleisis) to treat a prolapsed uterus (womb, U at left). A uterine prolapse is where part or all of the uterus protrudes out beyond the vaginal opening. It is caused by weakness in the pelvic muscles that should support the uterus. During Le Forts procedure the front (A) and back (B) walls of the vagina are stitched together, to prevent the uterus from protruding.
