Global coral bleaching event 2023-2024. The world is currently experiencing the fourth global coral bleaching event, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Between Feb 2023 and Apr 2024, significant coral bleaching has been documented in the major ocean basins. The stress driving coral bleaching is due to the warming of the worlds oceans, which is becoming more frequent and severe. Although it can impact economies and livelihoods, it doesnt necessarily mean that the corals will die. Corals can recover if the stress driving the bleaching reduces.
