Illustration of the US molecular biologist Carol Greider (born 1961). Greider discovered the enzyme telomerase in 1984. She identified its role in preventing the shortening of telomeres (ends of chromosomes) during DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) replication. For this work she shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack W. Szostak.
