Illustration of the Chinese fibre optics pioneer Charles Kao (1933-2018). Kao pioneered the development and use of fibre optics in telecommunications in the early 1960s. In 2009 he was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Physics for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication. Widely regarded as the father of fibre optics Kao was born in Shanghai but now holds joint British and American nationalities.
