Light micrograph of a pathogenic Phytophthora ramorum oomycete (fungus-like organism). Phytophthora ramorum spores causes the disease sudden oak death (SOD). This infects trees, causing patches of dead tissue called cankers to emerge. This is typically followed by leaves falling off, which can eventually kill the trees. Few control mechanisms currently exist; detection and destruction of infected plants is the main method currently.
