Skin on the hands of an African-American male patient peeling after scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is caused by infection with group A Streptococcus bacteria. The symptoms include a sore throat, fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic deep red rash. As the rash fades the skin around the fingers, toes and groin may peel, a process that can last for several weeks.
