Floating solar farm, Provence, France. Provence receives nearly 3000 hours of sunshine annually and is an ideal site for solar energy. At Lazer, in Alpes de Provence, a hydroelectric reservoir was partly covered with floating solar panels in 2023. The panels are mounted on floating islets and anchored to the reservoir bottom. 50,000 panels deliver 20 megawatts of power, which is sufficient for the local population of 12,500 people. The panels are expected to have a working life of thirty years. Floating solar panels remain cooler and are more efficient at lower temperatures. This is the first time hydroelectric and solar panels have been combined on the same site.
