Light micrograph of Blastomyces dermatitidis fungal cells reproducing asexually by budding in a patients pus sample. Budding begins when a fungal cell develops buds known as daughter cells. These buds gradually grow and the parent cell nucleus divides, with newly divided nuclei entering the daughter cells. The buds eventually split off to form independent fungal cells, which go on to develop to a point where they are capable of budding themselves. Blastomyces dermatitidis can cause the disease blastomycosis when inhaled, especially in immunocompromised people, which can cause symptoms such as fever and coughing.
