Tropical storm Zeta over the Atlantic Ocean on 2nd January 2006. Zeta was the 27th named storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, extending the already record-breaking season yet further. The previous record was held by 1933's 21 named storms. Tropical storm Zeta formed on 30th December 2005 and became only the second tropical storm since records began to be active in the new year, after hurricane Alice in 1954-5. The 2005 season also contained a record 14 hurricanes, including Katrina, which destroyed the city of New Orleans, USA, Stan, which caused over 1000 deaths in Central America, and Wilma, the most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.
