The girl at right is speaking into one of the cups, and the sound waves are being transmitted along the string to the other cup, being held to the other girl's ear. The sound waves pass from the string into the air inside the cup, and the girl will be able to hear what the other girl is saying. This apparatus is used to demonstrate the principles of sound waves and their transmission. Tin cans can also be used instead of paper or plastic cups.
