The top layer is the stratum corneum (flaky, brown), which is composed of dead, keratinised flattened cells that are continuously sloughed off and replaced with new cells from below. The dermis (green) contains the blood vessels (holes) that nourish the upper layer. Below the dermis is the subcutaneous layer (brown) which is mostly composed of fat.
