SuitSat space debris. The SuitSat (centre) is an unneeded Russian Orlan spacesuit, released into Earth orbit on 3 February 2006 by the crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The Earth is at left. The spacesuit was fitted with a radio that transmitted recordings made by schoolchildren to amateur radio operators around the world. A few weeks later the spacesuit entered the Earth's atmosphere and burnt up. The ISS orbits at a height of around 350 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
