Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Komagataella phaffii - methylotrophic yeast. Komagataella phaffii is a newly identified yeast that has methanol-assimilating capabilities. It can use methanol as a sole carbon source when glycerol or glucose is not found as a food source. Shown hear are yeast cells with newly formed yeast buds (daughter cells) and bud scars. The anamorphs of certain Komagataella species are various Candida species. K. phaffii is closely related to another methylotrophic yeast Komagataella pastoris (formerly known as Pichia pastoris). K. phaffii is thus a potential recombinant organism that could be used to produce large quantities of specialized proteins such as enzymes and human growth hormones.
