Bluebird has been a symbol of happiness since thousands of years ago. One of the oldest example is where a blue or green bird (qingniao) was messenger of Xi Wangmu or "queen mother of the west" (goddess in chinese religion and mythology). Also, a famous song line "somewhere, over the rainbow, blurbirds fly.." (Arlen & Harburg, 1938) is using the idiom.
