GRBs or gamma-ray bursts are the brightest events in the known Universe, far brighter even than supernovae. They often result from the collision of two neutron stars, or they can accompany particularly violent supernovae, the so-called hypernovae. Astronomers think the most powerful gamma-rays bursts arise in systems such as this, where a giant star is orbited by a normal star.
