Intestinal brush border. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a brush border in the small intestine, showing the numerous microvilli (hair-like) that form a dense brush-like covering on the absorptive surfaces of the cells. The brush borders of the intestinal lining are the site of terminal carbohydrate digestion. The microvilli have enzymes for this final part of digestion anchored into their apical plasma membrane as integral membrane proteins. These enzymes are found near to the transporters that will then allow absorption of the digested nutrients. Magnification: x4000 when printed 10 centimetres wide
