Illustration of human alveoli. The alveoli are air sacs in the lungs, at the ends of the bronchioles, that allow the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the bloodstream. Oxygen is passed into the blood when breathing in and carbon dioxide is then breathed out. The alveoli can become damaged by diseases such as emphysema and pulmonary oedema, causing breathing problems from reduced lung capacity.
