Synthetic biology (synbio) is the redesigning of organisms for useful purposes by engineering them to have new abilities. By 2030-2040, synbio could have an economic impact of USD 3.6 trillion per year. The largest impact will be in the agriculture and food sector (e.g. lab grown meat), and human health and performance sector (e.g. for use in live organisms such as yeast to deliver drugs). In the materials and energy sector, one example for synbio would be microalgae that could be reprogrammed to produce biofuel more efficiently. In the consumer products sector, synbio could be used in personalised services such as genetic ancestry testing, gene therapy or skin aging treatments.
