Exploding head syndrome, composite conceptual image. Exploding head syndrome (EHS) is a sleep disorder characterised by the perception of a loud noise or a sense of explosion in the head. This usually happens while transitioning into or out of deep sleep. Along with the loud sound, EHS can occur along with flashes of light and muscle jerks. Although it is not dangerous or painful, it can lead to fear, anxiety and interrupted sleep. The exact cause of EHS is still unknown; however, it has been linked to stress and fatigue. EHS does not typically require treatment, but certain antidepressant medications have been found to be helpful.
