Blood vessel formation in a tumour, illustration. Like healthy cells, malignant (cancerous) cells can't live without oxygen and nutrients. Malignant tumour cells release angiogenic growth factor proteins (primarily VEGF-A) when they sense a shortage of oxygen. These proteins act as signals for nearby blood vessels to grow and extend towards the tumour, initiating the process known as angiogenesis.
