Preserving genetic diversity. Tips of garlic plants (Allium sativum, green), that were being grown in culture, have been excised and immersed in droplets of cryoprotecting solution, and then frozen in liquid nitrogen (blue ice). This process preserves the plant's genetic material, serving as a record of the genetic diversity of the species.
