Portrait of Christopher Llewellyn Smith (b.1942), British physicist and Director-General of the CERN particle physics laboratory near Geneva. Llewellyn Smith studied physics at Oxford University. In 1967-74, he worked at research centres in Europe, Russia and the USA. In 1974 he was appointed to the staff at Oxford University, becoming Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1987. He received the Maxwell Prize Medal in 1979, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984. He started work as Director-General of CERN on 1 January 1994. He is seen here behind a computer display of a subatomic particle collision recorded at the LEP particle collider at CERN.
