Roger Joseph Boscovich (1711 - 1787), Croatian physicist, astronomer, mathematician, Jesuit priest and polymath. Born in Dubrovnik in the Republic of Ragusa (now Croatia), Boscovich studied and lived in Italy and France. He developed a precursor of atomic theory, and made many contributions to astronomy. These include procedures for determining the equator of a rotating planet and for working out the orbit of a planet. In 1753 he also discovered that the Moon has no atmosphere.
