McKay Shoe-sewing machine, illustration. Lyman Reed Blake, an American inventor, devised a sewing machine for sewing the soles of shoes to the uppers. Blake sold the patent to Gordon McKay, a self-taught engineer and businessman. Blake and McKay worked on improving the machine, and the McKay sole-sewing machine headed the market in the US and the UK for over twenty years.
