He was chief engineer on an expedition in 1889-90 to explore the possibility of running a railway line through the Grand Canyon. He was also involved in mining exploration and operations in numerous locations including in Glen Canyon in Utah and Arizona. Petroglyphs are prehistoric images chipped into the surface of rock.
