Aphrodite of Aphrodisias. From Aphrodias, second-third century AD. The relief bust was found in the theatre, and is inscribed 'Theodoros dedicated (this)'. It reproduces part of the defining cult image of the local goddess that was created in the Hellenistic period and designed to evoke her Anatolian aspect. She is stiff and frontal and wears a distinctive costume and tall headdress. Photo via Newscom
