St Paul Healing the Cripple at Lystra Karel Dujardin (1626-1678) oil on canvas, 1663 Dujardin not only painted landscapes with Italian flair, but also large history paintings inspired by Italian examples. Here, the Apostle Paul towers above a group of sick people. When he heals a crippled man in the name of the Christian god, the onlookers take him to be the heathen god Mercury. Dujardin understood the art of using figural gestures to enhance the pathos and drama of a scene. Photo via Newscom
