Somaskanda India, Tamil Nadu, Chola style, 12th century, bronze. The term Somaskanda refers to Shiva and means 'with Uma and Skanda'. In this particular presentation, Shiva and Uma sit on a rectangular pedestal, with the child Skanda standing between them. This representation developed in Southeast India and was particularly popular during the 10th-13th centuries. On feast days these images were carried in procession around the city. Photo via Newscom
