Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), Archbishop of Canterbury, was committed to the Tower of London in 1553 and charged with high treason for declaring Queen Mary I illegitimate and supporting the attempt to place the Protestant Lady Jane Grey on the throne. He was executed in Oxford in 1556
