JoAnn Hardin Morgan (centre, born 1940) watching the Apollo 11 launch. US aerospace engineer Morgan, the instrumentation controller for Apollo 11, was the only woman in the control room. She and the other members of the Kennedy Space Center mission control team at the Launch Control Center are watching the launch of Apollo 11 at 09:32 local time (13:32 UTC) on 16 July 1969. Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon, doing so on 20 July 1969. Morgan worked at NASA for over 45 years, retiring in 2003. She achieved many firsts by women within NASA, rising to senior management and receiving many awards, including two outstanding leadership medals.
