Abduction of Helen (Rape of Helen), attributed to Benozzo Gozzoli, 1460-1480, Tempera on wood, London, National Gallery, one of the earliest surviving paintings of a subject taken from classical mythology. Such subjects had already been depicted in. illustrated books and the style of this picture still resembles that of an illuminated manuscript. In fact the painter's conception of the scene is much closer in feeling to one of the romances of chivalry, with their graceful unreality, than to the forthright heroism of the Iliad.
